EDITORS COMMENTS
Captain Philip Fletcher Fullard: The Unlikely War Hero on the Cover of Tatler in 1918 Amidst the chaos and brutality of the First World War, a remarkable image emerged from the battlefields that defied the grim reality of the time. This striking cover of Tatler magazine, dated 1918, features the portrait of Captain Philip Fletcher Fullard, a British flying ace who became the top-scoring pilot in the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) flying Nieuports, with an impressive tally of 40 victories. Fullard's reputation as a superb combat leader made him a hero among his peers and the British public. Despite his fearsome reputation as a fighter pilot, this image captures a different side of Fullard – a man recovering from a broken leg, sustained while playing football. The contrast between the war hero and the ordinary man is striking. Fullard's military decorations, including the Military Cross with two bars, Distinguished Service Order, and Air Force Cross, are evident in the photograph. Philip Fletcher Fullard was born on May 27, 1897, and was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1919 New Year Honours list. His heroic actions during the war earned him a place in aviation history, and his image on the cover of Tatler serves as a testament to his bravery and resilience. This photograph is a rare glimpse into the life of a remarkable man who defied the stereotypes of war heroes and showed that even in the midst of conflict, there was room for moments of normalcy and joy.
