EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey stands proudly among his Central Powers allies during the First World War. The Sultan, dressed in traditional Ottoman attire, is flanked by three other monarchs: Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, King Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austro-Hungary. The meeting took place in November 1917, during a time when the Central Powers were seeking to strengthen their alliance against the Allied forces. The Sultan's presence in this gathering was significant, as the Ottoman Empire was one of the original signatories of the Triple Entente with France and Russia in 1907. However, in 1914, the Ottoman Empire switched sides and joined the Central Powers, hoping to regain territories lost during the Balkan Wars. Kaiser Wilhelm II, wearing his military uniform, is seen to the left of the Sultan. He played a crucial role in persuading the Ottoman Empire to join the Central Powers. King Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, wearing a military uniform with numerous medals, is to the Sultan's right. Bulgaria had joined the Central Powers in 1915, hoping to expand its territory at the expense of Serbia and Greece. Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary, dressed in his formal attire, is seated to the Sultan's right. Austria-Hungary was a major power in Europe and played a significant role in the war on the Eastern Front. The Sultan's alliance with Austria-Hungary was crucial in maintaining the Ottoman Empire's territorial integrity in the face of Allied advances. This photograph is a testament to the complex political alliances and maneuverings during the First World War. The four rulers, each with their unique motivations and interests, came together in the hope of securing victory for the Central Powers. The outcome of the war would ultimately lead to the downfall of the Ottoman Empire and the redrawing of the map of Europe.
