Born in 1875, Tritton's innovative spirit and engineering expertise would ultimately lead him to make a significant impact on the battlefield. Sir William Tritton is best known for his role in the development of the tank, a revolutionary military vehicle that would change the face of warfare forever. The idea for the tank was born out of the need to break the deadlock of trench warfare and provide troops with a means of mobile, armored protection. Tritton, who had previously designed armored cars and other military vehicles, was the driving force behind the project. In 1915, Tritton established the William Foster and Co. company to build the tanks.
