EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases two intriguing herbs, Shepherd's Needle (Scandix pecten veneris) and Hemlock Chervil (Scandix anthriscus), from Joshua Hamilton's edition of Nicholas Culpeper's English Family Physician, published in 1792. Culpeper (1616-1654), an English botanist, herbalist, and astrologer, was renowned for his comprehensive herbal, The Complete Herbal, published in 1653. Shepherd's Needle, also known as Venus's Comb, is depicted on the left side of the engraving. Its elegant, feathery foliage and delicate, umbelliferous flowers are beautifully rendered in the hand-coloring. The plant was believed to have various medicinal uses, including the treatment of gout, dropsy, and as a diuretic. On the right side of the engraving lies Hemlock Chervil, or Cerefolium, with its distinctive, fern-like foliage and small, white flowers. This herb was used in traditional medicine for its diuretic, carminative, and emmenagogue properties. The intricate details of the copperplate engraving, combined with the vibrant hand-coloring, provide a stunning visual representation of these two herbs and their unique characteristics. This historical artwork not only showcases the botanical beauty of Shepherd's Needle and Hemlock Chervil but also offers a glimpse into the rich history of herbal medicine and the work of a remarkable figure in the field, Nicholas Culpeper.
