1959 Bourget Dassault Etendard Prototype

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this black-and-white photograph, the second prototype of the Dassault Etendard IVM (Improved Maritime Variant) is seen on display at the 1959 Le Bourget Air Show. The Etendard IVM was a significant development in the field of naval aviation, representing an advancement in both design and capabilities from its predecessor, the Etendard IB. The Etendard IVM was a single-engine, carrier-borne strike aircraft, designed primarily for the French Navy. Its sleek and aerodynamically advanced design was a testament to the innovative engineering prowess of Dassault Aviation. The aircraft's distinctive canard wings, which were positioned in front of the main wings, provided additional lift and improved stability during takeoff and landing on aircraft carriers. The second prototype, as seen in this image, was the first Etendard IVM to be completed and was used extensively for flight testing. The aircraft underwent a rigorous testing program, which included evaluating its performance in various weather conditions and at different altitudes. The testing phase was crucial in fine-tuning the aircraft's systems, including its powerful Atar 01C engine, advanced avionics, and weapons delivery systems. The Etendard IVM was a versatile aircraft, capable of performing a range of missions, including strike, reconnaissance, and anti-shipping roles. Its primary armament consisted of four 30mm DEFA cannon, while it could also carry various types of bombs, rockets, and missiles. The aircraft's advanced radar and navigation systems enabled it to locate and engage targets accurately, making it a formidable force in the skies. This photograph captures a moment in aviation history, as the second prototype of the Dassault Etendard IVM takes center stage at the 1959 Le Bourget Air Show. The Etendard IVM would go on to serve with distinction in the French Navy for many years, demonstrating the innovative and pioneering spirit of Dassault Aviation.
