EDITORS COMMENTS
Regulus Cuvieri, or Cuvier's Kinglet, is depicted in this stunning hand-coloured aquatint plate from John James Audubon's "Birds of America." This exquisite illustration, which is part of the original double elephant folio published between 1827 and 130, was engraved, printed, and coloured by R. Havell (& Son) in London. The Cuvier's Kinglet is a small bird belonging to the family Regulidae and the order Passeriformes, commonly known as the kinglets. This bird is native to the eastern United States and Canada, and is characterized by its short, round body, long, curved bill, and distinctive crest. The species was named in honor of the French zoologist Georges Cuvier. In the background of the illustration, a branch of an Ericaceae plant, likely a Kalmia species, is depicted. Ericaceae is an order of flowering plants, commonly known as the heath or ericaceous plants. They are angiosperms, or flowering plants, and are characterized by their small, simple, and often brightly colored flowers. The order includes many important economic plants, such as blueberries, cranberries, and rhododendrons. The geomorphology of the Cuvier's Kinglet is well captured in this illustration, with its compact body shape and long, curved bill. The bird is perched on a branch, its wings slightly spread, revealing the intricate details of its feathers. The illustration also highlights the bird's bright yellow legs and feet. The Aves order, to which the Cuvier's Kinglet belongs, is characterized by the presence of feathers, toothless beaked jaws, and a four-chambered heart. The Eudicot classification, to which both the Cuvier's Kinglet and the Ericaceae plant belong, is a subgroup of the Angiospermae, or flowering plants. The Angiosperms are further classified into two major groups: monocots and eudicots. The Eudicots, also known as the Asterids, are characterized by the presence of two cotyledons in their seeds and a specific arrangement of veins in their leaves.
