EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 59 from Recherches pour servir a l'histoire naturelle des Mammifères, Vols. 1-4 (1868-74) by Dr. Henri Milne-Edwards (1800-1885) and Dr. Alphonse Milne-Edwards (1835-1900) showcases two distinct species of the Mustelid family, the Putorius davidianus and P. moupinensis. These ferrets are native to Eastern Asia and are part of the Carnivora order, Mustelidae family, Mustelinae subfamily, Caniformia superorder, Eutheria class, and Mammalia phylum. The Putorius davidianus, also known as the Chinese ferret-badger or the David's ferret-badger, is depicted on the left side of the plate. This mustelid is native to China and is characterized by its short legs, elongated body, and powerful claws. The animal's fur is typically brown with white spots, and it has a distinctive flat head and short snout. On the right side of the plate is the P. moupinensis, or the Moupin ferret-badger, native to China and Tibet. This species is slightly larger than the Putorius davidianus and has a more rounded head and a longer snout. Its fur is typically brown with black stripes, and it has a distinctive white patch on its chest. These illustrations were created during the 19th century by the renowned French naturalists Dr. Henri Milne-Edwards and Dr. Alphonse Milne-Edwards. Their groundbreaking work, Recherches pour servir a l'histoire naturelle des Mammifères, was a comprehensive study of the mammals of the world and remains an important reference in the field of mammalogy. The meticulous attention to detail in these illustrations showcases the naturalists' expertise and dedication to accurately documenting the natural world.
