1814 1862 Nephew Philip Kearny

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Philip Kearny (1814-1862), an American army officer and Union general during the Civil War. Born into a prominent New Jersey family, Kearny was the nephew of Stephen W. Kearny, who played a significant role in the Mexican-American War. Philip Kearny began his military career in the 1st Dragoons in 1832, and his exceptional skills and leadership abilities were quickly recognized. He served in the Seminole Wars and the Mexican-American War, where he was brevetted for his bravery at the Battle of Churubusco. During the Civil War, Kearny was a vocal advocate for the use of cavalry and was instrumental in organizing the Federal cavalry forces. He was appointed as a brigadier general in the volunteer army in July 1861 and later promoted to major general in November of the same year. Kearny's most notable command came during the Second Battle of Manassas, where he led the Union cavalry charge against Stonewall Jackson's Confederate forces. Despite his successes, Kearny was tragically killed during the battle, becoming one of the highest-ranking Union officers to die in the conflict. This image, taken during Kearny's earlier military career, shows him in his prime, with a stern expression and a sharp military uniform. The portrait is a testament to Kearny's dedication and commitment to his country and the military, making it an essential addition to any collection of American military history.
