EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the United States Navy's first production Boeing F3B-1, identified as A7675 (msn 938), as it proudly served with VF-2 on board the USS Langley in the late 1920s. The F3B-1 was the Navy's designation for the Boeing Model 77, a versatile aircraft that made significant contributions to naval aviation during the interwar period. The F3B-1 was the Navy's first monoplane fighter, replacing the biplane fighters of the time. It was also the first Navy aircraft to be designed specifically for carrier operations, featuring a folding wing and a tailhook for arresting on the carrier's deck. This particular aircraft, 2-F-19, was the first production F3B-1 to join VF-2, the Navy's first fleet fighter squadron. The Boeing Model 77 was a significant advancement in naval aviation technology, offering improved performance and versatility compared to its biplane predecessors. The F3B-1 was primarily used as a fighter, but it could also be configured as a torpedo bomber or a transport plane. Its introduction marked a new era in naval aviation, paving the way for the development of more advanced carrier-based aircraft. This photograph is a testament to the pioneering spirit of the United States Navy and its commitment to advancing aviation technology. The F3B-1's service on the USS Langley represents a pivotal moment in naval aviation history, as the Navy transitioned from biplane fighters to monoplane fighters capable of operating from aircraft carriers.
