EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the United States Air Force's Consolidated XC-99 43-52436, a historic military aircraft with an impressive aviation resume. The XC-99 made its first flight on November 23, 1947, from San Antonio, Texas, and embarked on its maiden transatlantic journey on August 12, 1953, flying from the United States to Frankfurt, Germany, via Bermuda and the Azores. Following its retirement due to metal fatigue, the XC-99 was put on public display at Kelly Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas. However, as time took its toll, the aircraft deteriorated and was eventually donated to the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio, in 1993. Disassembly of the XC-99 began at Kelly Field in April 2004, and by the summer of 2008, the aircraft had been transferred to Dayton. In 2012, the XC-99 was moved once again, this time to Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson for storage in the dry desert environment, where it waits for funding for restoration. This iconic aircraft, a testament to the advancements in aviation technology during the 1950s, continues to captivate the imagination of aviation enthusiasts.
