EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases two historic aircraft, Percival P.16 Q.6 G-AFFD (msn Q.21) and Westland WS.55 series 1 G-AODO, at Redhill Airfield in the late 1950s or early 1960s. The Percival P.16 Q.6 G-AFFD, the first production aircraft of its kind, was impressed by the Royal Air Force (RAF) in April 1940 as X9407. After surviving both the war and post-war service, it was eventually withdrawn from use in May 1959 and has been undergoing restoration since the 1960s. The Westland WS.55 series 1 G-AODO, operated by Fison Airwork, is also seen in the image. These aircraft represent a significant part of aviation history, with the Percival P.16 Q.6 G-AFFD holding a special place as a pioneering production aircraft for the Percival Aircraft Company. The image offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing these magnificent machines in their final years of service before they were taken apart for restoration projects. Last known to be at Seething in 2009, these aircraft have a rich history that continues to inspire aviation enthusiasts and historians alike.
