EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases North American P-51C-5-NT Mustang NX4184N, also known as "Baily Betty," during a race event in the late 1940s. The Mustang, with its distinctive nose art and race number 34, is seen soaring through the sky with an undeniable sense of power and agility. Originally, this Mustang, identified by its manufacturing serial number 103-26279 and former military serial number 42-103725, was struck off charge and sent to Searcy Field in Stillwater, Oklahoma for disposal on October 5, 1945. Following its military service, it was sold by the War Assets Corporation to aviation pioneer Paul Mantz on February 19, 1946. The Mustang was then registered under the new name NX4814N. Unfortunately, the thrill of racing proved to be too much for the historic warplane, as it met with a tragic end in September 1947 during a racing event. Despite this, the image of Baily Betty in flight remains a testament to the enduring legacy of the North American P-51 Mustang and the spirit of aviation during this era.
