EDITORS COMMENTS
"This poignant image captures the final moments of Louis Michel Lepeletier de St Fargeau, a French revolutionary statesman who met his end in a tragic and violent manner. Born in 1760, Lepeletier was a prominent figure in the National Assembly during the French Revolution, known for his advocacy of radical political change. However, his commitment to the cause would ultimately lead to his downfall. In September 1793, King Louis XVI was on trial for treason, and the Assembly was called upon to vote on the king's fate. Lepeletier, along with 29 other deputies, voted for the death penalty. The decision was a controversial one, and it sparked outrage among the king's supporters. Following the vote, a garde du corps, a royal bodyguard, tracked down Lepeletier and assassinated him in the streets of Paris. The event was a shocking reminder of the volatile political climate of the time and the dangers faced by those who dared to challenge the monarchy. This print bears the autograph of Lepeletier de St Fargeau and dates from the period of his life and death. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for political change during the French Revolution, and the often brutal consequences of their actions." This image is a powerful representation of the turbulent events of the French Revolution and the personal cost of political conviction. It is a valuable historical artifact that sheds light on a pivotal moment in world history.
