EDITORS COMMENTS
In this stunning handcolored lithograph, we find a portrait of Pedro de Urbina, the Archbishop of Seville during the 17th century. The image is derived from an original oil painting by the renowned Spanish artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and was meticulously handcolored by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard. The lithograph itself was expertly produced by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie. Pedro de Urbina (1578-1640) was a prominent figure in the Spanish ecclesiastical and political scene. Born in Seville, he rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church, eventually becoming the Archbishop of his native city in 1624. His tenure as Archbishop was marked by his dedication to the welfare of his flock and his commitment to the Counter-Reformation. The Archbishop is depicted here in his full ecclesiastical regalia, which includes a richly embroidered robe, a mitre adorned with precious stones, and a pastoral staff. The intricate details of the fabric, the delicate shading of the handcoloring, and the lifelike quality of the Archbishop's features all serve to bring this historical figure to life. This image is taken from "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), a comprehensive work by Georges Duplessis, published in Paris in 1867. The publication of such detailed and accurate records of historical costumes was an essential contribution to the study of fashion history and the preservation of cultural heritage. In this portrait, we are transported back in time to the grandeur and splendor of the 17th century Spanish court, where Pedro de Urbina, the Archbishop of Seville, held a position of great power and influence.
