EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration is taken from the second edition of Archibald Thorburn's seminal work, "British Birds," published in 1925. The image features a side-by-side comparison of two small, active tit species: the Coal Tit (Parus ater) and the Great Tit (Parus major). Both birds are depicted perched on a branch, their belly feathers ruffled, showcasing their distinctive anatomical differences. The Coal Tit, with its grey-black plumage and white belly, is seen on the left. Its round head, small beak, and short, grey crest add to its charming appearance. The Coal Tit's belly is cream-colored, contrasting sharply with its darker upperparts. The bird's long, narrow tail feathers are also visible, helping to balance its body as it clings to the tree. On the right, the Great Tit is illustrated with its vibrant green and yellow plumage. Its face is adorned with a black chevron that runs from the nape of its neck to the base of its beak. The Great Tit's belly is also white, but its back is a rich, warm brown. The long, thin needle-like beak of the Great Tit is well-suited for extracting insects from tree bark. The Coal and Great Tits are both common daytime birds belonging to the order Aves, and are often found in wooded areas. They are known for their agility and acrobatic abilities, making them a delight to observe in their natural habitat. This beautiful illustration, created by the renowned natural history artist Archibald Thorburn, captures the essence of these charming birds and their unique features, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the early 20th century.
