EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored illustration, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard, transports us back to the 15th century and the courts of Milan. The nobleman depicted wears an elegant and intricately detailed outfit that reflects the opulence and refinement of the time. The nobleman's head is covered by a toque, a tall, conical hat that was popular in Northern Europe during the late Middle Ages. The toque is adorned with a richly embroidered band and a large, ornate brooch, possibly made of precious metals and gemstones. Draped over his shoulders is a cape, which is secured at the neck with a heavy, ornate collar. The nobleman's robe, which is worn underneath the cape, is also richly decorated with intricate embroidery and features a low-cut neckline. The nobleman's doublet, which is worn underneath the robe, is fitted to his body and features a high, standing collar. The doublet is also adorned with intricate embroidery and is secured with a wide, decorative belt. The nobleman's neck is adorned with a magnificent necklace, which is made of pearls and other precious gemstones. The brooch at his throat is also encrusted with gemstones, adding to the overall opulence of his outfit. This illustration, taken from the book "Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries" published by Levy Fils in Paris in 1860, provides a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and style of the 15th century Milanese nobility. The intricate details of the nobleman's outfit, as well as the skillful use of color in the handcolored lithograph, make this a truly captivating and beautiful work of art.
