This exquisite hand-colored stipple engraving depicts the wild or yellow Jasmine, Jasminum fruticans, a beautiful and fragrant shrub belonging to the olive family. The intricate details of the plant's delicate flowers and foliage are expertly rendered by Mlle. Brenet, based on an original illustration by Pierre-Joseph Redoute. The engraving is taken from Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau's renowned Traite des Arbres et Arbustes, published in Paris between 1804 and 1819. Jasmine is an evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region, known for its sweet and intoxicating fragrance. The yellow flowers, which bloom in clusters, emit a delightful aroma that has made Jasmine a favorite in perfumery for centuries. The plant's stems are covered in small, oval leaves, and it can grow up to 6 feet tall. The botanical illustration and engraving process was a labor-intensive one, requiring great skill and patience. The artist would first create a detailed drawing of the subject, which would then be used as a guide for the engraver. The engraver would meticulously carve tiny dots into a copper plate, using a sharp tool, to create the image. The plate would then be inked and pressed onto paper to create the final print.
