EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the White-lipped Peccary, scientifically known as Tayassu pecari, also referred to as the White-lipped Tpecary, Tagnicati, or Dicotyles labiatus. This vulnerable species of peccary is native to the forests and grasslands of Central and South America. The White-lipped Peccary is easily distinguishable by the distinctive white stripe that runs along its snout and lips, which gives it its name. They are medium-sized, with a body length of around 100 cm (39 inches) and a weight of up to 30 kg (66 lbs). They have a robust build, with a short, thick coat of hair that varies in color from yellowish-brown to dark brown. This engraving, created by Harriet or Edward Griffith, is an exquisite example of the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustration. It was produced as part of Edward Griffith's The Animal Kingdom, a comprehensive work on zoology published in London by Whittaker in 1825, under the direction of the renowned French naturalist, Georges Cuvier. The White-lipped Peccary is an important species in its ecosystem, playing a crucial role as a seed disperser and a prey animal for larger predators. However, they are currently classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and hunting for their meat and hides. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this fascinating and essential creature and ensure its survival for future generations to appreciate and study.
