EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by Pfitzer after an illustration by Adolph Fries, showcases two intriguing creatures of the American continent: the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) and the cassava plant, also known as yuca or manioc (Manihot esculenta). The opossum, depicted in the foreground, is the largest marsupial in North America. With its distinctive grayish fur, pink nose, and long, prehensile tail, it is a common sight in forests and woodlands from Canada to Panama. In the background, the cassava plant, a staple food source for many cultures, thrives. Its tuberous roots, rich in carbohydrates, are a valuable energy source for both humans and animals. The manicou, or two-tone opossum (Didelphis oreilles bicolores), can be seen nibbling on the cassava roots, showcasing the symbiotic relationship between these two species. This engraving is an exquisite example of the detailed and accurate illustrations found in Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors bring the opossum and cassava to life, allowing us to appreciate their unique features and the intricacies of their habitats.
