Anubis, the Egyptian god of mummification and the afterlife, is depicted in this stunning copperplate engraving by Giacomo Bossi. The image is based on an illustration by D.A. from Pietro Paolo Montagnani-Mirabili's "Il Museo Capitolino," published in Rome in 1820. Anubis is shown with the head of a jackal, a symbol of his role as a guide for the deceased in the afterlife. He wears a chiton, a simple tunic, and holds the caduceus, a staff entwined with two serpents, which represents the power to heal and protect the dead. Anubis was also known as Hermanubis, a fusion of Anubis and the Greek god Hermes, reflecting his role as a messenger between the living and the dead.
