EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print showcases the South Island tomtit (Petroica macrocephala macrocephala), also known as the Great-headed titmouse or Parus macrocephalus. Native to New Zealand, this small bird is a resident of the South Island and Stewart Island. The South Island tomtit is a member of the Old World tit family, but is distinct from its North Island counterpart, the North Island tomtit (Petroica macrocephala longipes). The South Island tomtit is characterized by its distinctive large head, which gives it its scientific name macrocephala, meaning "large-headed." This bird has a grayish-brown back and wings, with a white underbelly and a yellow-orange beak. The South Island tomtit is an omnivorous bird, feeding on insects, spiders, seeds, and fruit. This beautiful print is a work of art from the pages of "A General History of Birds," by the renowned English ornithologist John Latham. Published in Winchester in 1823, Latham's work was one of the most comprehensive works on the natural history of birds at the time. The print was created through a combination of hand-drawing and engraving, resulting in a highly detailed and accurate representation of the South Island tomtit. The South Island tomtit is an important part of New Zealand's rich avian biodiversity, and this print serves as a testament to the beauty and intrigue of this unique bird species. Today, the South Island tomtit remains a beloved and iconic bird of New Zealand, and this print is a valuable historical record of its appearance and natural history.
