This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838, showcases two fascinating and distinct species of the animal kingdom: the Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) and the Senegal dormouse (Graphiurus species). The Eurasian red squirrel, depicted on the left, is a native of Europe, North America, and Asia. With its distinctive red fur, bushy tail, and large, pointed ears, it is an instantly recognizable symbol of the forest ecosystem. Red squirrels are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of nuts, fruits, seeds, and occasionally insects. They are known for their agility and dexterity, which enable them to climb trees with ease and hide their food in secret locations. On the right, the Senegal dormouse, also known as the Senegal myoxus or Senegal rat-kangaroo, is a nocturnal rodent native to West Africa. Unlike the red squirrel, the Senegal dormouse is a small, furry mammal with a long, bushy tail and large, round ears. Its fur is typically grayish-brown, with a white underbelly.
