EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the corner facade of the Duke of Wellington Public House, located in Bethnal Green, London. Established in 1934, the pub, also known as a "boozer" or "bar," was once a beloved local watering hole and gathering place for the community. The Duke of Wellington was a part of the Hoare & Company Limited, a well-known name in the British pub industry, although it should be noted that this image does not depict the company's logo. The photograph, taken prior to its closure in 2002, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the classic red brick exterior and ornate signage that were common features of many British pubs during that era. The pub's name, "Duke of Wellington," is proudly displayed above the entrance, paying homage to the famous British military leader, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Sadly, the Duke of Wellington Public House met its end in 2008, when it was demolished. Today, the site stands empty, a reminder of the rich history and community connections that once thrived within its walls. The back of this print includes a trading record, detailing the pub's history from 1934 to 1961, providing a fascinating glimpse into its past. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the role that pubs play in shaping the social fabric of our communities and the memories they leave behind.
