EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the enduring spirit of Elsie Knocker and Mairie Chisholm, two extraordinary British ladies who made a significant impact during the First World War in the small Belgian town of Pervyse. Known as 'The Two,' these women set up medical facilities to support the Belgian Army when they arrived in 1914, providing much-needed care to soldiers during the early stages of the war. Their selfless actions did not go unnoticed, and their biographer, Diane Atkinson, sought to honor their memory with a memorial statue in their adopted hometown. However, the town of Pervyse declined the proposal. Natasha, the proprietor of the Ariane Hotel in Ypres, a favorite lodging place for British visitors to the area, generously offered to have the statue placed in the gardens of her establishment instead. In this image, Elsie and Mairie are seen sitting on a sandbag wall, their faithful dog, Shot, resting at their feet in the foreground. The scene is a testament to the camaraderie and resilience that defined the war effort during this period. The memorial, which was unveiled in 2015, stands as a lasting tribute to the incredible work of these two remarkable women and their unwavering dedication to helping others during a time of great need.
