The Peace of Constance, 1183: A Historical Moment Captured in Art This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Giarre and Stanghi after a design by Giuseppe Bossi, depicts a significant moment in European history: the Peace of Constance, signed in 1183 between Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa of the Holy Roman Empire and his son Henry VI, King of the Romans, and the members of the Lombard League. The scene unfolds in a grand setting, with the emperors seated on their thrones, surrounded by the leaders of the Lombard cities. Queen Theodelinda, the last ruling queen of the Lombards, stands prominently among them, her regal presence adding to the solemnity of the occasion. Agilulf, the Duke of Milan, is also present, his expression reflecting the relief felt by the Lombards as peace was finally restored after years of conflict. The background of the image is dominated by the impressive main door of the Monza Cathedral, with its intricate Bas-Relief decoration. Angels, saints, and other religious symbols adorn the relief, symbolizing the spiritual significance of the peace treaty.
