EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Longnose Sawshark, Pristiophorus cirratus, also known as the Tentaculated Shark or Squalus tentaculatus. The illustration was drawn and engraved by the renowned naturalist artist, Richard Polydore Nodder, and published in George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's The Naturalist's Miscellany in London, 1804. The Longnose Sawshark is a unique and fascinating shark species, easily recognizable by its elongated snout, which is armed with a row of sharp, tooth-like projections, resembling a saw. This saw-like snout is not only an impressive feature but also an essential hunting tool. The shark uses it to locate prey by detecting the electrical signals produced by their muscles. Once the prey is located, the shark swipes its snout sideways, delivering a powerful blow and stunning the prey. The Longnose Sawshark is found in the shallow waters of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, typically in depths of up to 100 meters. They are relatively small sharks, growing up to 1.5 meters in length. This illustration provides a rare glimpse into the natural history of this intriguing shark species, which was not well understood during the early 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the engraving showcase the high-quality craftsmanship of the time, making it an essential addition to any collection of historical zoological illustrations.
