EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative group photograph captures the brave and dedicated firefighters of the LFB-LCC Harrow Fire Brigade in 1929. The image features fifteen firefighters, standing proudly in front of a red brick wall, dressed in their full uniforms and holding their helmets under their arms. The back row consists of six firefighters, including W Ensten, J L Stanford, A King (Driver), G Bevington (Driver), A Nicholls (Driver), and A Beamon. In the front row, we find W Webb, W Putman, G W Berry, A Lane, J Mann, A Walls, and G Manewell. The group is centered around Fire Officer A E Hester. The firefighters of the LFB-LCC Harrow Fire Brigade were part of the London Fire Brigade, which was formed in 1865 and came under the control of the London County Council (LCC) in 1889. The fire brigade was responsible for protecting the residents of Harrow and the surrounding areas from fires and other emergencies. The firefighters in this photograph are dressed in their traditional uniforms, complete with helmets, boots, and medals. Their uniforms were designed to protect them from the heat and hazards of firefighting. The helmets, with their distinctive peaked crowns and breathing masks, were an essential part of their equipment. The boots, made of leather, were heavy and sturdy, providing protection for their feet while they battled fires. The medals on their chests indicate their years of service and their dedication to the fire brigade. The firefighters in this photograph were not only brave men who risked their lives to save others, but also proud members of the LFB-LCC Harrow Fire Brigade, dedicated to serving their community in the 1920s.
