EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing 19th century print captures the chaotic moment of a horse and drunk huntsman crashing through the window of a shop, leaving shopkeepers and customers in a state of shock. In the foreground, Caingey Thornton, dressed in hunting pinks, is atop the powerful chestnut horse Hercules, his face contorted with focus as he pursues the scent of a fox. Hot on their heels, Mr. Sponge, also known as "Lord Scatters," clings to the small pony Multum in Parvo, his disheveled appearance and drunken state evident as he struggles to maintain his balance. The hounds, hot on the trail, can be seen in the background, their bells jingling as they follow the chase. The shop window of Messrs Frippery and Flummery shatters under the force of the impact, scattering merchandise and startling the shopkeepers and customers inside. This handcoloured steel engraving, created by John Leech after an illustration from Robert Smith Surtees' "Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour," offers a comical and humorous take on the traditional foxhunt, highlighting the unpredictability and excitement of the sport during the Victorian era.
