EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored lithograph, titled "Drinker, moth, Euthrix potatoria (1), blue underwing, Catocala fraxini (2), and red underwing, Catocala nupta (3). Bombyx buveur, Noctuelle du frene (4), Noctuelle mariee (5)" was created in 1833 by the renowned French naturalists Hippolyte and Polydor Pauquet for their publication "Histoire des Papillons" (Story of Butterflies) dedicated to youth at the Musee du Naturaliste. The intricately detailed print showcases five distinct moth species, each with their unique characteristics. The Drinker moth, Euthrix potatoria, is depicted in the center, its wings spread wide, revealing the striking pattern of the underwing. The Blue underwing moth, Catocala fraxini (2), and Red underwing moth, Catocala nupta (3), are shown in their eponymous colors, their wings adorned with intricate patterns that resemble those of their namesake butterflies. The two Noctuelle species, Bombyx buveur (4) and Noctuelle mariee (5), are also displayed, their wings closed, revealing their camouflaged upper surfaces. The Bombyx buveur, or Clifden Nonpareil, is known for its striking eyespots, while the Noctuelle mariee, or Mariee Noctuelle, has a more muted, mottled appearance. This beautiful work of art is a testament to the naturalists' meticulous observation and dedication to documenting the natural world. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of detail and depth, making each moth's unique features stand out. The lithograph is a reminder of the beauty and diversity of the moth world, often overlooked but equally deserving of admiration as their more famous butterfly counterparts.
