EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases two beautiful and equally enchanting members of the rockcress family: Cyprus rose-flowered rockcress (Arabis purpurea) and purple-flowered aubrietia (Aubrietia purpurea). The image, taken from Robert Sweet's seminal work "The British Flower Garden," published in Ridgeway, London, in 1827, was meticulously produced by Weddell, based on the botanical illustration of Edward Dalton Smith. The Cyprus rose-flowered rockcress, native to the Mediterranean region, including Cyprus, is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial that boasts rosy-hued flowers adorned with intricate, delicate veining. The flowers bloom in clusters, creating a captivating display of color against the rocky terrain for which it is named. The purple-flowered aubrietia, on the other hand, is a hardy annual that hails from the Alps and the Apennines. Its vibrant, purplish-blue flowers appear in clusters, cascading gracefully over the edges of rocky ledges and walls. The plant's small, lobed leaves add texture and contrast to the striking blooms. Both of these rockcress species have been cherished by gardeners for their charming beauty and hardiness, thriving in rocky, well-drained soils. This engraving serves as a testament to their enduring appeal and the artistry of the botanical illustration and copperplate engraving processes, which captured their essence with remarkable detail and precision.
