EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Andrea Freschi after Antoine Cardon, showcases an exquisite collection of Chinese musical instruments from the Qing Dynasty. The image, published in Henri-Leonard-Jean-Baptiste Bertin and Jean Baptiste Joseph Bretons' seminal work "China, Its Costumes, Arts, Manufactures, etc." in 1824, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of ancient China. The centerpiece of the composition is an iron Hien-pan (1), a large, flat, bronze cymbal with intricate decorative patterns. To its left, a magnificent bronze vase (2) rests, adorned with elaborate floral designs and dragons, serving as a beautiful backdrop for the musical instruments. A traditional Chinese drum (3) is depicted in the foreground, its tall, cylindrical body and wide, flat drumhead ready to produce resonant, rhythmic beats. To the right of the drum, a wooden percussion instrument in the shape of a fish (4) is displayed. Known as a "Yu," this instrument is designed to mimic the sound of fish jumping in water when struck, adding an element of playfulness and whimsy to the ensemble. Lastly, a Bong-gui (5), a large, two-stringed, bowed instrument, is positioned at the bottom left corner of the image. Its distinctive shape and elaborate decorative details make it a striking addition to the collection. This enchanting representation of Chinese musical instruments not only showcases the artistic craftsmanship of the Qing Dynasty but also provides a window into the cultural traditions and practices of ancient China.
