Cartoon, A Parcel of Old ------ Frightened at a... Bill
Cartoon, A Parcel of Old ------ Frightened at a Nasty! Great! Ugly! Jew Bill. A satirical comment on the House of Lords rejection of the Jewish Disabilities Bill, designed to permit Jewish MPs to swear a non-Christian oath of allegiance. The Bill was approved by the House of Commons in 1848, but was rejected twice by the House of Lords. Lionel de Rothschild had been elected in 1847 -- as a result of this rejection he resigned his seat and forced a by-election, which he won. There were more years of delay, and the so-called Jews Relief Act was finally passed in 1858.

A Parcel of Old ------ Frightened at a Nasty! Great! Ugly! Jew Bill
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a powerful and provocative political cartoon from the 1840s, created in response to the House of Lords' rejection of the Jewish Disabilities Bill. This satirical commentary, published in Punch magazine in 1849, highlights the deep-seated prejudice and intolerance towards Jewish people in British society during this period. The cartoon depicts a frightened and anxious-looking parcel labeled "Old ------" (a euphemism for Jew) standing before the House of Lords, surrounded by a crowd of aristocratic peers wearing coronets and carrying the mace of authority. The caption reads "Frightened at a Nasty! Great! Ugly! Jew Bill," reflecting the fear and suspicion that Jewish people faced due to their religious and racial differences. The Jewish Disabilities Bill was designed to permit Jewish MPs to swear a non-Christian oath of allegiance, which had been a barrier to their participation in British politics since the 13th century. The bill had been approved by the House of Commons in 1848 but was rejected twice by the House of Lords. Lionel de Rothschild, the first Jewish MP, had been elected in 1847 but was forced to resign due to this rejection, leading to a by-election that he won. The bill was not finally passed until 1858, after years of delay and political maneuvering. This cartoon serves as a reminder of the long and complicated history of religious and racial discrimination in Britain and the power of satire to challenge and expose societal prejudices. Its vivid imagery and biting commentary continue to resonate with contemporary audiences, making it a valuable historical artifact and an important contribution to the political discourse of its time.
