EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts The Black Leopard, also known as Panthera pardus, in its natural habitat within the Gardens of the Zoological Society. The Black Leopard is a subspecies of the common leopard, native to Africa, and is characterized by its jet-black fur, which provides excellent camouflage in the dark forests where it resides. The engraving is taken from William Smellie's translation of Count Georges Buffon's seminal work, "History of the Earth and Animated Nature," published by Thomas Kelly in London in 1829. Buffon's work was a groundbreaking study of natural history, covering a vast range of subjects from geology to zoology. The inclusion of this image of The Black Leopard in the publication reflects the importance placed on the study of mammals, particularly big cats, during this period. The intricate detail of the engraving is evident in the leopard's muscular form, the texture of its fur, and the lifelike expression in its eyes. The image also includes a small onca or jaguar, another big cat species native to South America, which is depicted in the background. This inclusion may have been intended to highlight the similarities and differences between these two large felids. The Black Leopard was a popular subject for naturalists and collectors during the 19th century, and this engraving would have been a prized addition to any natural history collection. Today, it serves as a reminder of the fascination with the natural world that drove the scientific discoveries of the past and continues to inspire us today.
