Burnt Capitol Cocceius Control Guard Ineffective Marcus Nerva Offers Sacrifices Praetorian
EDITORS COMMENTS
Nerva Sacrifices at the Capitol, Rome: An Ineffective Emperor's Desperate Plea Marcus Cocceius Nerva, the ineffective emperor of Rome, is depicted in this historical print offering burnt sacrifices on the Capitol, the ancient citadel and religious center of the city. The year is 98 AD, and Nerva, who had recently come to power at the age of 65, is seen kneeling before an altar, his outstretched hands holding a sacrificial bowl. The smoke from the burnt offerings rises into the sky, signifying his pleas to the gods for guidance and support. Despite his noble intentions, Nerva's reign was marked by instability and turmoil. The Praetorian Guard, the imperial bodyguard, had become a powerful force in Roman politics, and their loyalty was a constant concern for the emperor. In an attempt to secure their allegiance, Nerva had granted them land and other privileges, but this only fueled their ambition and desire for more power. The Praetorian Guard's influence reached a boiling point when they demanded that Nerva adopt one of their own, Marcus Otacilius Agricola, as his successor. Nerva, who had no surviving heir, was faced with a difficult decision. He could either appease the guard and risk losing his own power or stand firm and risk a rebellion. The print captures a moment in time when Nerva, in desperation, turns to the gods for guidance. However, the fate of this ineffective emperor and the future of Rome hung in the balance, and the outcome of his pleas would soon be revealed. The smoke from the sacrifices may have filled the air with the promise of divine intervention, but it could not hide the underlying tensions that threatened to tear apart the Roman Empire.
