Thomas Andrews: The Titanic's Tragic Hero This poignant photograph captures the image of Thomas Andrews, the ill-fated naval architect and managing director of Harland and Wolff, the Belfast shipyard where the RMS Titanic was built. Taken around 1911, the black and white portrait reveals a man of distinguished character and intelligence, with piercing eyes that seem to convey a deep sense of responsibility and determination. Born in 1873 in Northern Ireland, Andrews joined Harland and Wolff in 1890, quickly rising through the ranks to become the company's chief designer in 1907.
