Front cover of The Sketch magazine featuring Mrs H. J. Tennant, formerly May Edith Abraham (1869-1946) wife of Harold John Tennant, the ex-Under-Secretary for War, and Co-Director of the Womens Department of National Service, established at St. Ermin s, Westminster. Mrs Tennant was the daughter of Mr George Abraham of Rathar, Co. Dublin and the first woman to be appointed Superintendent (or Lady Inspector) of Factories. She was assisted in the role at the Womens Department of National Service by Miss Violet Markham. When the National Service Department was set up, a Womens Branch was established with Mrs. H.J. Tennant, and Miss Violet Markham as Codirectors, and they made various appeals, registered women for the land, munitions, W.A.A.C. and for wood cutting and pitprop making. A great demonstration of Womens Service was held in the Albert Hall in January 17, 1917, at which Mrs. Tennant and Miss Markham, Lord Derby, Minister of War; Mr. Prothero, President of the Board of Agriculture, and Mr. John Hodge, Minister of Labour, spoke and at which the Queen was present. It was an appeal to women for more work and a registration of their determination to go on doing all that was needed. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph features Mrs H.J. Tennant, nee May Edith Abraham (1869-1946), an influential figure in British society during the First World War. Mrs Tennant is depicted in her official capacity as Co-Director of the Women's Department of National Service, which was established at St. Ermin's, Westminster. She is dressed in a serious yet determined expression, wearing a simple yet elegant blouse and a brooch adorning her chest. Mrs Tennant was the daughter of Mr George Abraham of Rathar, County Dublin, and was the first woman to be appointed as a Superintendent (or Lady Inspector) of Factories. Her groundbreaking appointment paved the way for women's involvement in the workforce, and when the National Service Department was set up, a Women's Branch was established with Mrs. H.J. Tennant and Miss Violet Markham as Codirectors. Together, they made various appeals, registered women for the land, munitions, W.A.A.C., and for wood cutting and pitprop making. A great demonstration of Women's Service was held in the Albert Hall on January 17, 1917, at which Mrs. Tennant and Miss Markham, along with Lord Derby, Minister of War; Mr. Prothero, President of the Board of Agriculture; and Mr. John Hodge, Minister of Labour, spoke. The Queen was also present at the event, which was an appeal to women for more work and a registration of their determination to go on doing all that was needed. Mrs Tennant's contributions to the war effort were significant, and her appointment as Co-Director of the Women's Department of National Service marked a turning point in the role of women in British society. This photograph captures a moment in history when women's participation in the workforce became an essential part of the war effort and paved the way for greater gender equality in the future.
