EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant memorial, located on Hessle Road in Hull, pays tribute to the lives lost during a tragic maritime incident in 1904. The statue commemorates George Henry Smith and Richard William Leggett, crew members of the British trawler Crane, who lost their lives as a result of a misunderstanding with the Russian Baltic Fleet. On October 22nd, the Russian fleet, believing they were encountering the Imperial Japanese Navy, attacked and sank 48 harmless British trawlers at Dogger Bank. The incident, known as the Dogger Bank Incident or the Russian Outrage, claimed the lives of 78 British sailors, including Smith and Leggett. The memorial also honors Walter Whelpton, the skipper of the Trawler King, who died from shock on May 13th, 1905, due to the aftermath of the attack. The statue was unveiled on August 30th, 1906, by Lord Nunburnholme. The memorial stands as a reminder of the human cost of military misunderstandings and the enduring bond between the people of Hull and their sea-faring heritage.
