This evocative photograph captures the fourth and last Duke of Wellington, Arthur Charles Wellesley (1849-1934), in his later years. The Duke, who was born on November 1, 1849, was the eldest son of the third Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1807-1852), and Lady Frances Anne Burke (1817-1899). He succeeded to the dukedom in 1852, at the age of three, following the untimely death of his father. In this image, taken in 1912, the Duke is depicted in a casual setting, wearing a flat cap and holding a cane. The Duke's attire reflects the relaxed and informal nature of the scene, a stark contrast to the formal military uniforms and grandeur associated with his illustrious ancestor, the famous victor of the Battle of Waterloo. Arthur Charles Wellesley, 4th Duke of Wellington, was a prominent figure in British society during the early 20th century. He served as Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland from 1894 to 1902, and was known for his efforts to improve the living conditions of the Irish peasantry. The Duke also held various positions in the House of Lords and was a patron of the arts.
