EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Maria Christina of Austria, the enchanting Queen Consort of Spain, as she gracefully poses for the camera in 1902. Born on October 24, 1858, in Vienna, Austria, Maria Christina Henriette Desideria Felicitas Raineria was the second child and eldest daughter of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian II of Austria and his wife, Princess Charlotte of Belgium. At the tender age of 23, Maria Christina became the second wife of King Alfonso XII of Spain, following the tragic death of his first wife, Queen Maria de las Mercedes of Bourbon. The union was arranged to secure Austrian support for Spanish interests in North Africa. In this exquisitely composed image, Maria Christina is depicted seated, dressed in an elegant gown adorned with intricate lace and beading, reflecting the opulence and grandeur of the Spanish royal court. Her regal bearing and serene expression convey a sense of poise, intelligence, and strength, making her a fitting consort for the Spanish monarch. The photograph, taken in 1902, captures a significant moment in Spanish and European history. Maria Christina's marriage to Alfonso XII marked the beginning of a new era for the Spanish monarchy, which would last until her husband's untimely death in 1902. Following Alfonso's passing, Maria Christina served as regent for her son, Alfonso XIII, until he reached the age of 16. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who played a pivotal role in Spanish history, as well as the opulence and grandeur of the Spanish royal court during the early 20th century.
