EDITORS COMMENTS
Margaret Denham, née Brooke (1646-1667), was a figure of intrigue and political significance during the Restoration period of English history. Daughter of Sir Edward Brooke, Margaret's beauty and charm caught the eye of King James II, who made her his mistress in the late 1660s. However, her most notable relationship was with Sir John Denham, whom she married in 1666. Sir John Denham was a prominent courtier and politician, who had previously been married to Frances Aylesbury. Margaret's marriage to Denham was a strategic one, as it helped to strengthen Denham's position at court and provided him with a legitimate heir. Margaret and Denham had one son, John Denham, who would later become the 3rd Baronet. Margaret's connection to James II, however, continued to cast a shadow over her marriage. James II's infatuation with Margaret was well-known, and rumors of their affair persisted despite her marriage to Denham. This scandal, along with Denham's involvement in the Popish Plot, contributed to the couple's downfall. In this portrait, Margaret Denham is depicted as a graceful and elegant woman, with a serene expression and an air of refinement. Her attire is fashionable for the time, with a low-cut bodice and a voluminous skirt. The portrait serves as a reminder of the complex political and personal relationships that shaped the Restoration period, and the role that women played in shaping the lives of powerful men. Margaret Denham's life was cut tragically short when she died in childbirth in 1667, at the age of just 21. Her husband, Sir John Denham, was later implicated in the Rye House Plot, a failed assassination attempt on King Charles II and his brother James, Duke of York. The Denhams' tragic story is a reminder of the political intrigue and instability that marked the Restoration period, and the role that personal relationships played in shaping the course of history.
