EDITORS COMMENTS
Luigi Piana: The Bolognese Aeronaut (1826-1853) This evocative portrait captures the determined gaze of Luigi Piana, an Italian pioneer in the field of aeronautics. Known as the 'Bolognese Aeronaut,' Piana's passion for flight began in the mid-19th century, a time when ballooning was still a daring and uncertain pursuit. The map above his head illustrates the various locations of his balloon ascents, with Rome marked as his starting point. Piana's fascination with ballooning was ignited by the famous French aeronauts, Henri Giffard and Henri Tissandier. Inspired by their achievements, Piana began his own experiments with hot air balloons, determined to push the boundaries of human flight. His first ascent took place in Rome on August 20, 1852, and he quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and daring aeronaut. Tragically, Piana's luck ran out on his fifth ascent on November 27, 1853. Despite the risks, he continued to pursue his passion, and his legacy lives on as a testament to the early days of aviation. The vignette above the portrait shows a scene from one of his ascents, with the balloon lifting off from the ground, leaving the earth behind. This photograph, sourced from the AG Renstrom collection at the Library of Congress, dates between 1853 and 1900. It serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of early aeronauts like Luigi Piana, who risked their lives in the pursuit of flight.
