Lounge Suit County Cricket

With stumps pulled on a Thursday evening at Southampton when Hampshire required just one run to complete victory over Nottinghamshire, the teams were obliged to return the following morning to finish the match. Seeing no point in putting on their cricket whites, the Nottinghamshire team took the field in lounge suits and soft hats. Bill Voce and Fred Barratt took no chances with the weather and wore overcoats. Captain Arthur Carr bowled, and the second ball of the short day was driven by Hampshire batsman Alec Kennedy. He had no need to run as the mufti-clad fielders watched the ball trickle slowly to the boundary, making no effort to stop it. Date: 23 May 1930

1. Title: "An Unconventional End to a County Cricket Match: Lounge Suits and Overcoats at Southampton, 1930" 2. Description: This evocative photograph captures a unique moment in the history of county cricket, as Hampshire and Nottinghamshire teams faced off in Southampton on a Thursday evening in May 1930. With just one run needed for Hampshire to secure victory over Nottinghamshire in the County Championship, the teams were forced to suspend play due to impending darkness. However, the following morning brought uncertain weather, leaving both teams in a quandary about what to wear. 3. Scene: The Nottinghamshire team, with a touch of humor and resignation, took the field in lounge suits and soft hats, while Bill Voce and Fred Barratt donned overcoats to shield themselves from the chill. Captain Arthur Carr led the charge, bowling the second ball of the short day. The Hampshire batsman, Alec Kennedy, had no need to run as the mufti-clad Nottinghamshire fielders watched the ball trickle slowly to the boundary, making no effort to stop it. 4. Background: The image is a testament to the adaptability and camaraderie of the cricket community during an era when the game was deeply ingrained in British culture. The unconventional scene contrasts the traditional cricket whites and the formal attire, adding an element of whimsy to the competition. 5. Legacy: This photograph, with its historical significance and charming anecdote, offers a glimpse into the rich heritage of county cricket and the unexpected twists that often accompany the sport. It serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of cricket and the ability of its participants to find joy and humor even in the most unexpected circumstances.
