Lady Loughborough and son

Margaret Sheila Mackellar Chisholm, daughter of Harry Chisholm of Sydney, NSW, Australia married in 1915 Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, Lord Loughborough, eldest son of the fifth Earl of Rosslyn who was serving in the Kings Royal Rifles at the time this picture was taken. The marriage suffered from Loughboroughs drinking and gambling and the couple divorced in 1926. In 1920, Albert, Duke of York, the future King George VI was linked romantically with Sheila who, at that point, was still a married woman. She married secondly in 1928, Sir John Millbanke, eleventh baronet (d. 1947) and thirdly, Prince Dimitri Romanoff of Russia in 1954. She died in 1969. Pictured in The Tatler with her elder son, Anthony Hugh Francis Harry St. Clair-Erskine, the future 6th Earl of Rosslyn (born 18th May 1917, died 1977). Date: 1918

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This portrait captures Lady Sheila Chisholm, nee Margaret Mackellar, and her elder son, Anthony Hugh Francis Harry St. Clair-Erskine, the future 6th Earl of Rosslyn, in 1918. Lady Sheila, an Australian socialite, had married Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, Lord Loughborough, eldest son of the fifth Earl of Rosslyn, in 1915. At the time this photograph was taken, Lord Loughborough was serving in the King's Royal Rifles. However, their marriage was marred by Loughborough's excessive drinking and gambling, leading to their divorce in 1926. In the early 1920s, Lady Sheila was linked romantically with Albert, Duke of York, the future King George VI, while she was still married to Lord Loughborough. She later married Sir John Millbanke, eleventh baronet, in 1928, and Prince Dimitri Romanoff of Russia in 1954. Lady Sheila's fascinating life story is a testament to the complexities and intrigues of the upper classes in early 20th century society. This portrait, with its timeless elegance and the mother-son bond it portrays, offers a glimpse into a bygone era and the lives of those who shaped it."
