Camillebonnard Chivalry Gauntlets Helm Knight Knots Paulmercuri Shield Spurs Suitofarmor Tabard

EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored illustration, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard, depicts a noble knight of the Order of the Knot from the 14th century. The Order of the Knot, also known as the Order of the Garter, was an exclusive chivalric order founded by King Edward III of England in 1348. The order's insignia was a garter adorned with blue roses and golden fleurs-de-lis, symbolizing the unity of the English and French branches of the royal family. The knight in the illustration wears the distinctive tabard of the Order of the Knot, featuring the garter emblem prominently on the chest. He dons a helm with a visor lowered, protecting his head in battle. Underneath the helm, his suit of armor covers his body, with intricate designs etched into the metal. His gauntlets and spurs are also adorned with knots, a symbol of the order. The knight holds a large shield, painted with the same garter emblem. His horse, also adorned with knots, stands beside him, ready for action. The illustration captures the essence of chivalry and the spirit of the knights of the Middle Ages, who embodied courage, honor, and loyalty. Paul Mercuri's skillful drawing and Camille Bonnard's insightful text bring history to life in this image from Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries, published by Levy Fils in Paris in 1860.
