EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "John Earl Granville, 1st Baron Granville (1690-1763), Statesman and Politician" John Earl Granville, 1st Baron Granville, (1690-1763), was a prominent English statesman and politician who served under various monarchs during the early 18th century. Born on November 1, 1690, Granville was the eldest son of John Granville, 1st Earl of Bath, and his wife, Lady Anne Cavendish. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and entered Parliament in 1715. Granville's political career began in earnest under King George I, who appointed him Secretary at War in 1718. He later served as Paymaster-General (1721-1724) and Secretary of State (1734-1741). Granville's tenure as Secretary of State was marked by his support for Walpole's administration and his role in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Seville in 1729. During the War of the Austrian Succession, Granville served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1741-1744), where he attempted to quell the unrest caused by the Jacobite rebellion. He was later recalled to England and appointed Lord President of the Council (1746-1751). Granville's political fortunes waned under King George II, and he was dismissed from office in 1751. He was later created Earl of Granville in 1752, and he spent the remainder of his life in retirement. Granville died on December 23, 1763, at the age of 73. This photograph print depicts John Earl Granville in the later years of his life, with a serious and contemplative expression. The image serves as a reminder of Granville's significant contributions to English politics during the early 18th century, particularly his role as a key figure in the administration of King George I. The print is a valuable historical record of a man who played a crucial part in shaping the political landscape of his time.
