He served in the United States Army during the War of 1812 and later became a prominent figure in the military and political landscape of the South. Quitman's military career reached new heights during the Mexican-American War, which broke out in 1846. He led the Mississippi Rifles, a volunteer regiment, and played a key role in several important battles, including the Battle of Monterrey and the Battle of Buena Vista. Quitman's bravery and leadership earned him the respect of his soldiers and the admiration of his peers.
