EDITORS COMMENTS
John Anthony Quitman: A Hero of the Mexican-American War This striking image captures the essence of John Anthony Quitman (1799-1858), an American soldier and statesman who played a significant role in the Mexican-American War. Born in Georgia in 1799, Quitman was a man of great ambition and military prowess. He served in the United States Army during the War of 1812 and later became a prominent figure in the military and political landscape of the South. Quitman's military career reached new heights during the Mexican-American War, which broke out in 1846. He led the Mississippi Rifles, a volunteer regiment, and played a key role in several important battles, including the Battle of Monterrey and the Battle of Buena Vista. Quitman's bravery and leadership earned him the respect of his soldiers and the admiration of his peers. In this print, Quitman is depicted on horseback, wearing a plume in his hat and holding a sword. The battlefield in the background serves as a reminder of the many battles he fought and the sacrifices he made for his country. Quitman's intense gaze and determined expression convey his unwavering commitment to his cause. After the war, Quitman returned to politics and served as the governor of Mississippi from 1852 to 1854. However, his political career was short-lived, as he became increasingly disillusioned with the direction of the country and resigned from office. Quitman died in 1858, leaving behind a legacy as a hero of the Mexican-American War and a dedicated servant of his state and country.
