EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Indo-Pacific sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus, and moonfish, Mene maculata, from the esteemed Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles published between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), and expertly engraved by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. Pretre was a renowned artist, having previously served as painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Indo-Pacific sailfish is a large, elongated fish with distinctive sail-like dorsal fin, which can reach up to 3 meters in length. The moonfish, also known as the mola-mola or sunfish, is a unique and intriguing species, characterized by its round, flat body and lack of a tail fin. The sailfish and moonfish are both native to the Indo-Pacific region, and are important apex predators in their respective ecosystems. This exquisite engraving showcases the intricate details of these fascinating creatures, with their scales, fins, and patterns rendered in meticulous detail. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of beauty and depth to the image, bringing the vibrant colors and textures of the Indo-Pacific ocean to life. This historical artwork is a testament to the remarkable natural history discoveries of the past and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and studying the wonders of the natural world.
