EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of cricket history with the prominent figures of Heathfield Harman Stephenson and Tom Hearne, two notable cricketers of the 19th century. Heathfield Harman Stephenson, on the left, is depicted in his prime, having made history as the captain of the first English cricket team to tour Australia in 1861/62. His impressive leadership led the way for future international cricket tours, and later in his career, he umpired the first Test match ever played in England in 1880. Tom Hearne, the central figure, is another esteemed cricketer from the era, having been a part of the groundbreaking 1861/62 Australian tour. From 1872, he took on the role of manager of the ground bowlers at Lord's, further cementing his place in cricket history. The mystery deepens with the unidentified cricketer on the right, adding an intriguing layer to this historical image. Dressed in cricket attire, complete with pads and bat, the trio exudes the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship that defined the cricket community during the 1860s. This portrait, circa 1865, is a testament to the rich history of cricket and the remarkable figures who shaped its early development.
