EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the first harpsichord created by the renowned French-born instrument maker, Arnold Dolmetsch, in 1896. The harpsichord, now part of the esteemed collection at the Horniman Museum, is a significant addition to the Victorian and Edwardian Decorative Arts exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, which took place in 1952. Arnold Dolmetsch (1858-1940) was a pioneering figure in the revival of interest in early music and historical instruments. He spent a considerable portion of his working life in England, establishing an instrument-making workshop in Haslemere, Surrey. Dolmetsch's innovative approach to instrument making resulted in the creation of this exquisite harpsichord, which represents a pivotal moment in the history of keyboard instruments. The harpsichord's intricate design and meticulous craftsmanship are evident in the photograph. The richly decorated case, adorned with intricate carvings and inlaid with mother-of-pearl, reflects the ornate aesthetic of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The keyboard, with its delicate ivory keys, sits atop the soundboard, which is covered in thin strips of wood called jacks that produce sound when the keys are struck. Dolmetsch's harpsichord is a testament to the artist's commitment to preserving the traditions of the past while pushing the boundaries of innovation. Its inclusion in the Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition underscores the significance of this instrument in the history of music and decorative arts. Today, the harpsichord remains an enduring symbol of Dolmetsch's legacy and a reminder of the beauty and artistry of historical instruments.
