The Quex Park VAD Hospital admitted Australian, Canadian, Belgian and British patients during the years it was open. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Date: 1916

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite and camaraderie on the rear verandah of Quex Park VAD Hospital in 1916. The verandah, which ran along the back of the Museum buildings, provided a sheltered outdoor space for patients during the summer months. In this image, a group of patients, some wearing Australian caps, gather with a nurse, overlooking the beautiful gardens of Quex Park. The Quex Park VAD Hospital, run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, admitted patients from Australia, Canada, Belgium, and Britain between its opening on 15 October 1914 and closing on 31 January 1919. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. The patients were able to retain their regimental caps while in the hospital, adding a sense of pride and identity to their time of recovery. This poignant scene offers a glimpse into the daily life of the hospital and the courage and resilience of those who sought refuge there during the First World War.
